What to Write About on your Blog?

I have lost count of the amount of times I have heard the words “I can’t blog I have nothing to say!” and believe me when you are trying to convince someone that no one knows their business better than they do it can sometimes feel like you are trying to convince them to sell their soul to the devil.  However after a few hints and tips they soon see that they have more to write about than they first thought.

Below are a few of the tips that I give when I am advising on things to write blog posts about.

1. Look at what articles are in the newspapers and magazines that could be relevant to your industry and write your own article based on what is in their articles. You can quote them and link back to the article on their website when you do so. This means that the readers can go and check out the original article.

2. New products available in the industry. Lets face it we are all gadget freaks! Well I am anyway and anything new on the market is always of interest to me. When you are in business one of the main things that you need to stay on top of is how the business is moving and how you can stay up with that direction. By just staying on top of the new products and writing about them you can soon establish yourself as a good source of information on new products.

3. Write product reviews on products already out there on the market. Very important here to be nice. People hate negativity and it will put people off coming back to your blog. There is a very simple equation to knowing what is popular and what isn’t, if people are talking about it then it is popular. There are of course negative blogs and opinions but they are just that. If you are trying to attract people coming back to your business website then it is best to stay as positive as possible.

4. “How to…” Articles. There are  a number of people who are quite rightly very protective over what they do and how they do it within their business. However when it comes to giving over items of information about your business in a blog it can be a good idea to hand over almost all the information but hold back that little bit that will result in your visitors making contact for that extra little bit of information.

These are just a few of the things that I advise what to do when looking for subjects to write your blog posts about. There are literally hundreds of things you can write about and give information to your readers and customers, the most important thing to remember is to make sure you do it on a regular basis.

In the next part of this series I will be writing about the importance of your blog navigation.

Good advice for a general blog, but I disagree this time – I think for a wedding business this clashes with your previous advice to stay on topic.

This is the kind of thing I write about for English Wedding (general wedding blog), but for my calligraphy blogs I really only write about the business: latest orders, new ideas, poems I’m asked for etc. I think a blog to promote a wedding business has to be about the business, its products and services.

I’m curious what kind of business you were thinking of when you wrote this post?

Looking forward to the next ones in the series too.

      Hi Claire,

The post came around through people not knowing what to write about on their blogs and basically saying “There is only so much I can talk about with regards to….” It was mainly to point out that isn’t the case.

All of the examples given can be related back to ANY blogging not just the wedding industry but if i had to give examples of each it would be:

      1. The obvious Royal situation at the moment or any celeb wedding that happens at least once a month and how your own work relates to that in any way or shape.

      2. New products, I would be shocked if no one in the industry had a new range or a view on new products that are produced for the industry, a new range of crystals for jewellery, a new venue or even a fantastic wine to choose.

      3. Again with product reviews why would you not want to tell people more information on your own products or products that your own work well with?

      4. How to articles bring in more traffic than any other article, people want to know how to do things and to be a success online is to give away the odd secret here and there.

The fact is that I find it impossible to think that anyone in any business can say “I don’t know what to write about…” or “There isn’t anything else I can write about…” without being able to tie their subject matter back to themselves.

If I were to put my mind to it I could tie all number of industries back to almost anything but it has to be on subject. If you are writing a blog on football and you are looking for a subject to write about and nuclear fusion springs to mind that is off subject completely. However if you are talking about football and you do a post on the fact that certain clubs use solar power to run their lighting that can be classed as relevant even though off topic a little.

The idea of the post was to point out that people need to think out of the box when they are coming up with ideas in very specialist industries.

      Hope this helps?
