Are Your Website Visitors Spying On You??

I am hearing more and more about people having dips in their traffic from search engines, Google especially! Google is a beast and a bit of a nightmare at the moment, they change their search methods on a month by month basis. First it was Google Instant where you are given search results as you type, making your search experience faster as Google predicts what you are searching for. Now we have the Magnify Glass!!

You will see from the image below that the function of the Magnify Glass icon is to show a preview of the webpage (note page not site) that you will land on if you click the link. Here you will see that my site shows for my listing in Google. Basically people can see if your site has what they are looking for before they get to your page.

Google Magnify

So how is this going to effect you? Well for the first few months of any new feature on Google people don’t know it is there so they don’t really use it. Then some bomb will slap them in the head and they will get the realisation that they need to take advantage of this in order to save time. So this will mean that sites that look professional will start getting more hits because of this.

Don’t get me wrong the sites that are not so good will continue to rank but now the opportunity for the visitor to look at a site before they need to click on the link to visit is now possible. I personally believe that it is important to have a website that looks good, is easy to navigate and manage! This is the “Does Exactly What it Says on the Tin” method of web design and development. Anything too complicated turns people away and imagine now they can turn away before they even arrive at your website!?

I hear time and time again people saying they have been charged stupid amounts of money for web design when it could be done for far less money. You can get a website that looks good and converts well without the need to spend money that you don’t need to! Moving your website on a yearly basis is an exhausting experience as well which is one of the reasons when I set up sites for people I always make sure they can take full control without needing to pay or beg a web company to do anything.

Stay in control of your websites, make sure you have a nice design and ensure you have the website you want doing what you want it to do! That way you are the one that makes sure that when people view your site before they arrive for your content, basically your visitors are spying on you before they get to your website!!

Great points. I’m just reviewing my website now (one down, two to go…) to see if they look like they’ll deliver at first glance.
I wonder if Google will get any backlash… if websites all over the world have a 10% drop in traffic how will people react? Might be interesting to see in a month or two.

I think it will take longer than that to be honest and the only sites that will really be hit will be what we like to call fugly websites! Google are getting a lot of grief at the moment about Adword impressions due to their instant search showing thousands of listings for ads that no one pays any attention to!

Personally I think they need to start putting their minds into gear before their wallets! :o)
