There I was minding my own business quite enjoying my Saturday Afternoon preparing some content for training, blog and replying to some client emails and all of a sudden I get a message on Twitter. I won’t point out which one it was but basically it accused me of never tweeting about SEO, which I actually found quite hurtful considering the amount of free help and advice that I hand out on a daily basis. So I made a mental note of who it was and thought they could use a bit of help with three idiotic fatal errors they have made on their website to do with design, SEO and conversion.
We will start with the damn doorway page! You know the ones that say “Click here to see…” For the love of small fluffy animals why would you bother to make someone click an extra button to get to the content you want them to get to? I mean it makes sense to get them to land on the page that has all the details they need right? No not in this case it is a doorway page and even worse it has absolutely NO text on it so can easily be seen as a pointless page. Oh and it is the front page of the website as well.
Then we go to see who is giving us a bit of a battering in the Twitter feed for my lack of helpfulness and when we get to the about page it is so poorly designed and set out there is a picture under the menu….making the menu completely impossible to read. If I was looking for a photographer I would have left this site already but in this case no I thought I need to know more is there a way that I can really help this person. So after going backwards I thought I would put the site through one last test.
Alas it failed that test as well and I had now spent all of 45 seconds on the site and it had done nothing but annoy me to be honest with you. Left menu (which I had to go back to the landing page with no text to find because I couldn’t read the menu from the about page) No contact link just a Twitter link, Facebook link and Tumblr link and in this case they have already said that they don’t like me on social networks so no chance there.
So forgetting the lack of good keywords, description and content the site is hard to navigate and near on impossible to get conversions out of because it is so shockingly unfriendly. Even though this isn’t completely good SEO advice (well if you forget the 6 points that have been pointed out) I am pretty sure that this person will never read the post and never benefit as they already told me they have no intention of following me.
So with that in mind please take time to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes that this photographer has made with their site and get a good solid site structure, clear navigation and lots of helpful content.
I hope that this has been of some use, even though sarcastic to my loyal and loving twitter followers :o)
